 Exhibition 13-16 November, We Work, Devonshire Square, London

HENI Gallery presents The Story of Us and Them, a new exhibition of paintings by the Irish-born, London-based artist Conor Harrington open from 14 September until 13 October. Set against the backdrop of a fictional nation state, Harrington explores the idea of patriotism, and the divisions that arise from it, in his signature style that encompasses abstract, baroque and graffiti-style painting. At a time when walls are being built, borders are closing and countries move towards isolation, a post-globalization society is emerging. For Harrington, the mentality of ‘us and them’ is rising.

Harrington drenches historical portraits of forgotten generals in vivid hues of red and blue, exaggerating this idea of ‘us and them’ through various political and cultural tropes. He stages photoshoots on which he bases the scenes in his paintings and utilises fire extinguishers, brushes, squeegees, hand painting and more to build up an image on his large canvases. 

To mark its 30th edition, The Other Art Fair, the leading artist-led fair, is launching a second site wholly dedicated to showcasing women artists.

Curated by arts broadcaster and curator, Kate Bryan, Not 30% is part exhibition and part protest against the male dominated art world. A recent report showed women are at best represented 30% of the time in the art world.

60% of art graduates are women, yet in gallery representation, museum collections and exhibitions, the presence of women artists amounts to a maximum of 30%, often far less. At a time when more and more people are keen to support and collect women artists, Kate Bryan has handpicked a thrilling selection, delivered in one carefully curated location.

"I am a huge fan of The Other Art Fair,” comments Kate Bryan. “I love its democratic ethos and the way it truly supports and gives a vital, fresh platform for artists. When I was asked to curate a special section at The College I knew we had a safe space for a noisy moment about women artists. Not 30% draws attention to the stark gender bias of the art world and actively positions these artists as a creative force not to be ignored. There are many changes underway in the art world to address gender imbalance and Not 30% is happily part of a larger and urgent dialogue."

A veteran of the golden age of magazine illustration and a co-founder of the Association of Illustrators, Sanders’ solo exhibition includes his trailblazing portraits for magazines such as The Sunday Times and Nova Magazine during the 1960s, his unprecedented illustration work on 2001: A Space Odyssey with Stanley Kubrick up to his 2011 work commissioned by Matthew Weiner for series six of AMC’s Mad Men. Chronicling Sanders’ long and successful career the exhibition also includes previously unseen and unpublished artwork. 

An exhibition of monumental sculptures by award winning contemporary artist Helidon Xhixha opened at the Boboli Garden, Florence on the 27th of June 2017. In Ordine Sparso was curated by the Director of the Uffizi Galleries, Eike Schmidt and Diego Giolitti. The powerful summer exhibition allowed Helidon Xhixha to explore the ideas of chaos and order through his extraordinary series of thirteen monumental sculptures and installations. The works pay homage to how this concept has been portrayed in philosophy and the arts (sacred  geometry) and how it is interpreted in the natural world.

22-25 March 2018 will see The Other Art Fair return to Central London’s historic Victoria House. 120 contemporary artists will be exhibiting a variety of hand-picked works across all mediums, chosen by a respected selection committee that this year includes VP Art Advisory + Chief Curator at Saatchi Art Rebecca Wilson, founder of Jealous Gallery and Print Studio Dario Illari, director of BEERS London Gallery and author of ‘100 Painters of Tomorrow’ Kurt Beers and New York-born and London based contemporary art critic, editor and teacher Dr. Gilda Williams. 

Since its launch in 2011, The Other Art Fair has welcomed more than 200,000 visitors from around the world to its fairs and facilitated total sales in excess of £4 million, while becoming an unmissable event on London’s art calendar. With its distinguished committee of experts and guest curators, The Other Art Fair has established itself as the fair of choice for London’s emerging collectors. Uniquely, over 60% of clients at the The Other Art Fair London 2016 edition were first time buyers. 
Highlights of the March 2018 programme include: 

120 artists selected from across the globe, over half of which are female. The line-up includes Kristjana Williams, Victoria Topping, Marcelina Amelia, Sara Dare, Alexander Korzer-Robinson, Olivier Marc Thomas Leger and Michael Swallow.  

A series of immersive installations by established and emerging artists, including a creation by multi award winning Morag Myerscough, who will be taking over the entrance with her colourful signature graphic style. Fei Alexeli will be transforming her ‘No Bad Days’ artwork into a live neon bar installation featuring, complete with swing, exotic plants and ‘No Bad Days’ cocktails served at the bar. There will also be a small number of limited edition prints of Fei Alexeli’s ‘No Bad Days’ artwork available for sale.  

The Big Issue will have a stand selling a range of original artworks by artists and vendors working with The Big Issue. Artists include Rene Robbins, John Sheehy, Antony Pye, Andrew Howard, David Martin and Robyn Foreman. At least half of the profit from each sale of artwork will go directly towards the artist. The remaining profit is used to continue the mission of The Big Issue; to give people in poverty the opportunity of a hand-up. 

Art on a Postcard, featuring limited edition artworks on postcards by a mix of renowned artists including 2017 Turner Prize winner Lubaina Himid. Other participating artists include; Paula Rego, Ben Johnson, Billy Childish and Jimmy Cauty, with a live auction onsite on Sunday. 
Handpoke Tattoos by The Other Art Fair Guest Artist, Bluestone Babe. Choose your own living artwork in the form of a stick and poke tattoo. Guest artist and feminist, BlueStone Babe will be flying over from Brooklyn to tattoo a series of her designs for The Other Art Fair. This will be her first time tattooing in London and Europe. No pre-booking required, tattoo slots are limited and available on a first come first served basis. 

Sisters of Print and Print is Power will be combining forces to bring an extravaganza of all things ink and printed goodness in a program of inclusive workshops specially designed for The Other Art Fair. Expect live printing with ‘tongue & cheek’ slogans. 

Saatchi Art Talks, is a series of discussions and artist Q&As taking place throughout the weekend in the Saatchi Art Lounge, which will feature a number of immersive installations.  

Inspired by the spectacular imagery of solar physics, Guardian VR will present Crime Scene, a fully interactive virtual reality experience where you are the trainee forensic officer on duty during a 2 am murder. Participants will be guided by a crime scene manager through the process of gathering the right evidence to solve the killing in this pioneering new VR experience.   

Younger visitors can participate in creative art activities and crafty challenges in the popular Kids Create corner. Children’s activities are free of charge and suitable for all ages. 

In keeping with its position as both progressive and accessible, The Other Art Fair is affiliated with the Arts Council’s Own Art initiative. The initiative enables buyers to spread the cost of a purchase over 10 months with an interest free loan, enabling more art lovers to become collectors. 

Recovered historical portraits of leading British cultural figures  – including  Damon Albarn, Dame Judi Dench, Daniel-Day Lewis,  Kenneth Branagh, Ronnie Wood  and Morrissey  – will be exhibited in London.

The photographs, taken by The Douglas Brothers, were lost for over 20 years. Some have never been seen before. They will go on show for the first time at Art Bermondsey Project Space. 

The Douglas Brothers – real-life siblings Stuart and Andrew – spent a decade photographing leading figures from the worlds of art, literature, film, music, sport and fashion.

The Douglas Brothers signature style is considered highly influential. Sabina Gaskot-Gill from the National Portrait Gallery described it as “work that shaped the course of photography for a decade.”

After the brothers left the UK to make films, their stills work sat gathering dust for two decades in a disused storage unit and came very close to being lost forever.

The Douglas Brothers distinctive image making extended beyond portraiture and into abstract, collage, still-life, reportage, nudes and fashion.

Soho House Berlin teamed up with Liberatum to celebrate the launch of their new Soho House Apartments. Liberatum curated an incredible cultural programme that took place in the stunning apartments which included a Q&A with original supermodel Carmen Dell'Orefice, Marianne Faithfull in conversation with Stephen Frears, James Franco presenting his new film, Kim Cattrall talking about her acting career and a risqué performance piece from celebrated actress Rossy de Palma which began in the bedroom of one of the Soho House Apartments.

Michael Zagaris’ photographs have been dubbed the “last untouched rock archive.” An explosive collection of unforgettable images, Zagaris was responsible for shooting everyone in the rock music scene in San Francisco in the 1970s, including The Clash, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Grateful Dead, Blondie, The Sex Pistols, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Lou Reed, Patti Smith, Led Zeppelin, and many more.

John Hurt CBE was awarded the Liberatum Cultural Honour on Wednesday 10th April, 2013 at W London. The award was presented to John Hurt by Liberatum founder Pablo Ganguli.

The event was attended by guests including Steven Berkoff, Antony Beevor, Sir VS Naipaul, Billy Zane, Stephen Frears, Amanda Nevill, Ron Arad, Pam Hogg, Hanif Kureishi, Roksanda Ilinčić, Gavin Turk, Geordie Greig, Christopher Hampton, Sir Norman Rosenthal, Alan Yentob and Bill Wyman.

Previous recipients of the Liberatum Annual Cultural Honour include Gore Vidal, Sir VS Naipaul, Terry Gilliam, Sir Peter Blake, Marianne Faithfull and Dame Zaha Hadid.

In the spring of 1966, a British photographer embarked on a project to photograph the most beautiful women in the country. Birds of Britain, the seminal photographic book by John d Green celebrating the brilliant and beautiful women of the UK, was published the in 1967. Featuring models, society girls, singers, actresses and debutantes, Birds of Britain was a celebration of Swinging London’s movers and shakers and went on to become an immediate mainstream success selling 60,000 copies, 20 times the original print run. A US tour for John d Green and a selection of the ‘birds’ followed, with an appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show and even a single and the book went onto develop a cult following.

It is more than 50 years since The Zombies became one of the first British Invasion groups to top the U.S. singles charts. To mark the golden anniversary of their seminal album, Odessey and Oracle, Reel Art Press and BMG Books present The “Odessey”, an eclectic collection of rare and unseen photos, original artwork, and personal memories that offers readers an intimate snapshot of one of the most influential bands to emerge from the UK music scene of the 1960s. 

The lavishly illustrated book includes handwritten lyrics for 22 songs. From early hits including the likes of ‘She’s Not There’, ‘Tell Her No’ through to every song on Odessey and Oracle – including the hit single ‘Time of the Season’ – up to the present day. Each selection is accompanied by a running oral history by original band members Rod Argent, Colin Blunstone, Chris White, and Hugh Grundy. 
Renowned artist Terry Quirk, who created the look of Odessey and Oracle, has designed the book’s cover and contributed new artwork throughout, while artist Vivienne Boucherat has created a unique piece of art to accompany each of the 22 songs. Additionally, The “Odessey” is rich with reflections from music journalists, friends, and fans, including contributions from Tom Petty, who wrote the foreword, along with Brian Wilson, Carlos Santana, Susanna Hoffs, Paul Weller, Graham Nash, Clive Davis, Cage The Elephant, Nate Ruess and Patti LaBelle.

Bungalow 8 returns to Venice for the third time to bring Amy Sacco’s unrivalled parties to the 68th Venice Film Festival. "Bitter Sweet photo memories" - The Art Newspaper

It has been two decades since the colossal success of The Verve’s era-defining Urban Hymns, and it remains one of the biggest selling British albums of all time. The Verve is a fascinating memoir from the photographer Chris Floyd, released to coincide with the twentieth anniversary of the seminal album.

After an initial assignment in 1994, photographer Chris Floyd was embedded with the band in late 1996 and 1997 and documented the recording, touring and promoting of the album in the UK, Ireland and the USA – the only photographer to have such access. This new Reel Art Press edition is the first time his photographs from that time have been published.
